Scales of Fayt:
I yawned loudly and reached over and shut my alarm off. I sat up in bed, grabbing my remote in one hand, my glasses in another. I clicked the remote and my TV sprung to life, blaring the weather report for the day. I watched half attentively as I got ready for work. I stumbled to the bathroom, wiping the sleep out of my eyes, yawning again, I needed to stop going to bed so late, it left me tired every day. I looked in the mirror, a tired face stared back at me, eyes having a sunken look due to the dark circles under them. Short, disheveled, brown hair stood out from my head, I kept it short so I didn't have to fight with it styling it after I woke up. My eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep, making the blue of my irises stand out more than usual. I rubbed my chin, it was covered in stubble, but I decided against shaving, I was trying to get out the door quickly and I figured that skipping a day or two wouldn't do any harm.
I brushed my teeth quickly and headed back into my bedroom, grabbing a few items for work, then made my way into the kitchen, fixed a quick breakfast, and headed out for the day. It was chilly outside, fall was starting to set in, but it wasn't enough to warrant a jacket quite yet. I hopped in to my car and fired it up, the engine springing right to life, it wouldn't be until later in the year that I would have to fight with it due to the cold. I shifted into reverse and turned on my radio, hooking my iPod in and cranking the volume. As I pulled away from home I lost myself in my music, and made my way to work, oblivious to what the future held for me.
Work went by quickly, and it all blurred together, and I was more than happy to leave at the end of the day. I had other things that needed to be taken care of so I drove home quickly, at least as quickly as one could with traffic, I thanked the powers that be that I didn't need the freeway to get home, it would have been a nightmare. As I pulled in to the driveway I sighed tiredly. I turned off my car, set the park brake and locked it up, then headed inside. I went straight to my room, shedding my work clothes and made for the bathroom, intent on a nice, hot shower before I got down to anything else. I let the water relax me, and let my mind wander. It didn't get too far before I was jerked back to reality by my phone ringing. I sighed, and shut the water off, "So much for that idea..." I toweled off quickly and stumbled half dried into my room and snatched the phone off of my dresser.
"Y'ello?" I answered.
"Hey man, what're you doing tonight?" came a familiar voice, it was my cousin Henry.
"Cleaning the apartment man, you wanna come over and help?" I said half joking.
"Hell, no! I was hoping that you'd be up for playing the 360."
"Not tonight man, I've been putting this off for too long."
"Alright, well I'll talk to ya later then."
"Later man." I hung the phone up and shook my head slowly, most nights I would have jumped at the prospect of some serious game time, but I had sworn that I would get my work done first today, and I'd be damned if I let anything stand in my way. I set to it with a gusto, that quickly died out, cleaning was just something that I couldn't stay enthusiastic about. I turned my stereo up, and selected my 'work' playlist on my iPod, that usually helped a lot when I wasn't able to focus on the tasks that I had at hand. As I worked I was astounded by the amount of dust and debris that I had allowed to accumulate, and swore I wouldn't let it happen again, knowing full well that I'd probably forget and let things go for far to long again and end up doing this all again all to soon. I finished a few hours later, my shirt was covered in dust, and I tossed it in the hamper, my skin itched, I reasoned that it was due to all the crap that I had cleaned up, I had probably gotten it all over myself in the process, so I stripped of my now nasty clothes and headed for the shower, scratching idly at the back of my neck.
I cranked on the hot water and let the shower to warm up before I hopped in. I could feel the grime flow off of me, and I scrubbed down vigorously, leaving my skin tingling afterward. I stepped out, and dried myself off and wrapped my towel around my waist, while heading back to my room. I pulled on some clean clothes and looked at the time again, it had taken me a few hours to finish cleaning and was already past seven o'clock. I sighed, and booted my computer up, I figured I'd waste the rest of my night online, I didn't feel like getting into anything that would possibly take until the early hours of the morning. I clicked open my browser and started my rounds online, checking the various sites that I was a member of and my email, I had a few messages on each, and I answered to each of my friends then lost myself reading the various articles and what was believed to be 'insider' information. The next time I looked at the clock it was well past midnight.
"You have got to be shitting me, again!?" I grumbled irritably, I knew that I was going to end up staying up too late as it was, but it always seemed to sneak up on my anyways. I shook my head, and shut down my computer, "Man, when am I going to learn?" I shuffled over to my bed and curled up under the covers, sleep came to me that night and I dreamed, it was one that would mark a major change in my life.
It seems the time has come, the changes are beginning.
I looked around there was nothing around me, it was dark, and I couldn't see anything, I had the distinct feeling that I was floating in a void, and that was a bit unsettling.
There is much work to be done, you will face many hardships in the near future. Are you ready?
I was bewildered, "What are you talking about? What hardships?"
You're special, like so many others without realizing it, you will know what I am speaking of in the next few days. Trust your instincts they will not lead you astray, prepare yourself, you will never be the same after this.
"Not the same? What are you talking about, not the same?"
The voice chuckled, Look at yourself, and tell me.
I looked down, the darkness making it almost impossible to see, but there was something wrong with my body, I held up a hand, it was covered in thick scales on the outside and light pads on the inside, each finger had claws where my fingernails were supposed to be. I stared in wonder at the changes, when I felt myself slipping back into the waking world.
I reached over subconsciously and slapped my alarm clock. I rubbed my eyes, realizing that I was back home, or at least awake I shot upright in bed and started staring at my hand. The pink flesh mocked my study by quite stubbornly not doing anything spectacular. I sighed and ran my hand through my hair. I got out of bed and stretched out, I absently scratched at my neck, it was still bugging me, I got dressed and made my way into my bathroom where I dug out a bottle of lotion, squirting out a small amount into my hand and rubbed it into the offending spot, the itchy spot absorbing it quickly and it stopped being bothersome. I shrugged off the weird ass dream as just that, I had had dreams where I had changed into something else multiple times, most notably when I had been reading the Animorphs series. I chuckled, the imagination was an incredible thing, it had felt so real. I finished my morning preparations and continued my day as normal, putting the odd occurrence out of my mind. I quashed the little voice in my head that kept trying to tell me that it was more than a dream. Work went by as normal nonetheless I came home irritable and short tempered, my whole neck was itching to high heaven and I couldn't get it to stop, one of my friends noted that my back was taking on a sickly green color and I noted it to my boss that if I got some weird rash I would be out until I had gotten it resolved.
I made my way home and practically ripped my shirt off when I got in the door, my whole back was one big fire pit of itchiness. I scratched insanely as I made my way to the bathroom and spun so I could see what the hell was going on on my back, the whole thing was tinged green, though it wasn't the sick green of infection, it was a deep green, like that of pine needles.
"What the hell?" I muttered to myself, remembering my dream. If this was going on in accordance to that, what sort of problems was the future going to hold for me? I shuddered at the thought. I sighed, and slipped my shirt back on, I would rather deal with an incessant itch than someone seeing a weird discoloration on my back and asking awkward questions that I couldn't answer without being committed. I froze when I heard something behind me.
"Dude, what's with your back?"
I spun the blood draining from my face, Henry was standing right behind me, a look of complete disbelief on his face. I opened my mouth to explain only to find that I couldn't.
